The Zone Diet Weight Loss Program
The Zone Diet is another low carbohydrate diet, however, unlike the South Beach Diet or the Atkins diet, the Zone Diet does allow for, and even promotes eating "carbs". The idea of the Zone Diet, like those other previously mentioned weight loss programs, is to reduce insulin levels in the body. Similar to these other weight loss programs, you will very likely lose several pounds right away. It is important to understand that most of those "pounds" you are "losing" is water. That doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing either, so long as you are drinking at least 8 tall glasses of water a day (approximately half a gallon). In fact, you should drink that much water regardless, especially if you are on a diet. What is Insulin?Insulin is a hormone produced by the body to unlock fat cells for storage of fat. Many people have elevated insulin levels and therefore could be in risk of developing adult onset diabetes later in life. Insulin is a necessary and vital constituent in the human body, and when our insulin levels are out of the normal range, our bodies can experience nutritional complications. So What Makes The Zone Diet Different?The main difference between the Zone Diet and Atkins is the more uniform diet, and the allowance of "good carbs". Atkins tries to get you to voluntarily put your body into ketosis. Ketosis is not a natural state and can be very hard on your body. The Zone Diet minimizes this risk by keeping carbohydrates in your diet, the Zone just limits the types of carbohydrates you consume. Many people have had a great deal of success on this diet, but remember, the first few weeks of weight loss are very superficial and can come back quick. You need to maintain this diet for a while and get into the habit of eating the correct foods. The Zone Diet Critics SpeakThe Zone Diet has been criticized on many different fronts. Not surprising, the same people and groups that criticize the Atkins diet and the South Beach Diet are doing it again with the Zone Diet. This is because it too talks about the benefits of Ketosis and brings up a new term (to some of us): Eicosanoids. Eicosanoids are hormones involved in many metabolic processes and are responsible for obesity and disease according to Dr. Sears. However, there doesn't appear to be any scientific proof linking eicosanoids to obesity and disease. Of course, this doesn't necessarily mean he's wrong, he's just not been proven right. So once again, until someone swoops down and disproves, or proves, this latest theory (or the public loses interest and moves on to another program) the Zone will be on most dieters minds for a while.
